The Art of Knitting
September 1897
|
The Art of Knitting, now in public domain is copyright free and is a virtual trove of stitch patterns. It is my goal to rewrite and chart as many of these stitch patterns as possible.
You may use these stitches to create patterns for personal use, to sell or to give away. I only ask that you credit The Art of Knitting, Sept. 1897 as rewritten and charted by Cindy Moore and link to this site. |

Some of the swatches have been test knitted and some have not. I offer no guarantee that the stitch patterns are error free. If you do find an error, please e-mail me so I can correct the pattern. Please put lace project in the subject and which pattern you are writing about. Also I do not guarantee that the stitches are actually what the original author intended. Interpreting these patterns is a lot like translating a foreign language.
I am not recommending a needle size or particular yarn for the swatches. This would be a good time to use up left over lace and fingering weight yarn. Please join the yahoo group and upload photos of your completed swatches. |

Why Am I Doing This?
|
I like making charts. I find this fun and challenging.
I like knitting lace but there are so many shawls and scarfs out there I want to make and will never find the time. Knitting these swatches will let me experience a variety of stitches without a huge committment.
I like to figure things out. If you have ever seen one of these books, you will know what I mean. The text and abbreviations are nothing like the way patterns are written today.
Example: n is k2tog and th o is yarn over

What Am I Doing with the Swatches?
|
| I’m creating an altered book with my swatches. You can see an example of this on my blog. |
If you really, really appreciate the effort I made, you may make a modest donation.
